Default 1999 softail

I have a 1999 softail that I'm having issues with. It starts and idles perfectly fine. Once I take off riding, the speedometer falls dead or begins flickering along with the odometer and the exhaust starts popping and sounds and feels like it is only running on one cylinder. The speedometer and odometer will flicker occasionally and the engine will start to run right again only to flicker and go dead again. If I pull over and shut the bike down, it starts right back up and idles smoothly again. When I pull off again, I may make it 30 feet or I may make it 1 mile before it all falls dead again. I pulled the plugs and replaced them because they were fouled. Anyone have an idea of where I should start?

I'd start with the charging system diagnostics procedure in the sticky thread in this forum.

Thank you, I'll look into that.
