I'm going to put mid controls back on my 85 FXR. My question is do I need to loosen the motor and tranny mounts when I put the inner primary back on to ensure a good fit or will it slide right back into place??? Thanks in advance...

Don't forget any exhaust brackets or other items besides the engine mounts that might interfere with engine or trans movement. Had that happen to me. Your trying to align everything into place so the easier you make it for movement the better the alignment will be.
I have a suspicion that issues some guys have had with the broken raised lip on the engine by the stator at the large O-ring could be caused by bad/improper alignment. The easier it is for the primary bolts to draw the inner primary, engine, and trans into the proper locations, the less tension on that lip or inner primary. Less chance for leaks also.

Oh My Yes... Double Yes.. certainly exhaust, as on an FXR one pipe is held by the engine, and one pipe by the trans!!!
Thank You YD
I don't know how it is on your bike but on my 98 rkc there are pretty detailed instructions in the fsm for putting the primary back on. The motor, trans, and rear sprocket all have to be lined up just so.
