Hello Everyone.
Quick question:
If everything is perfect, good tires inflated properly, balanced; wheel endplay is perfect, engine aligned in the frame with the front and rear wheels, rear shock and front forks in good working condition.... what is the fastest, safe speed on a '84 FXR?
Would you say, 90? or 100?
What are your thoughts.
Larry
And then remember, what happens on it could just be worst then killing you. Smell the roses on it..
It will do most any legal speed limit. I would keep it at no more then 70 personally. It's no fun on a bike even at that speed unless it's simple required.
PS. Have a friend who has the very first FXR model year. His front brake piston got tight and locked the caliper up when the brake fluid got so hot.
It locked up the front tire at 35 and he slide it gently off to the side. Lucky to say the least.
You failed to mention a totally new rebuilt on all the wear and rubber parts of the brake system.

I don't normally ride very fast. 80 tops. I just curious. I know the CA Hwy Patrol used these bikes back in the 80's. i'm guessing they pushed these bikes to the 90's at least.

Lots of variables to consider there. Engine displacement/Performance mods. Stock tranny or overdrive for rev limitations. Is it just s top speed run or for long cruising speed?
I've topped out my 113" Evo Ultra Classic Six speed at 115 MPH two up before. I cruise it two up or solo at around 80 tops usually. That's usually about 2800-2900 on the revs.
Lots to consider, but you can run it till it tops out as it is or cruise it at 75-80 usually with no problem. Just my opinion of course.

Griz
I will not take an Evo over 100 mph with a passenger.. Way to many variables.. However depending on conditions (and that's what safe is, dependant on conditions not speed) I have taken my 98 up to 140... But never with a passenger..

I learned in my 20's that's a number I really don't need to know - long downhill straightaway, freshly paved ... What could go wrong ? Hit a dip at around 115 and damn near lost it when the suspension unloaded then landed. I was never so thankful to have the ability to ride it out until I was back in control. That cured me of high speed riding, I just enjoy the cruise now plus I don't think there's a long straight stretch of road near me except the interstate. If I ever get that curious again I'll try a dyno drag and run it to the rev limiter in top gear
120 on a Evo RK, won't never do it again just something stupid happens with Twin Cams and a Sturgis interstate. FXR should do 90 with a stock engine all day long being a light bike.
