Default Oil issue

I believe I'm having a oil pump issue. I think the oil returned to the tank but isn't pumping back to to the engine on my 80 ci evo

If there's no oil going to the motor, then how is it returning oil to the tank?

It is possible under one of two conditions. Either the pressure relief valve is stuck wide open (or spring missing) or the feed gears aren't pumping due to a sheared key.

Either way, need more info as in - is the oil light on when running?
How long has it run returning oil without adequate (or any) oil pressure?
Have you visibly looked into the tank to see the oil actually moving?
Year and bike model would be of some help also.

so I bought the bike at auction a month or so ago. 2005 fatboy special construction is what the title says. The bike is more like a late 90s frame and I believe it's a evo clone engine. They said that it had been sitting for some time and the oil was supposedly just changed but the low oil light had been on since the change. I put about 150 miles on it just short 10 mile or so rides. I check the oil again yesterday and it was ok. Rode about 10 miles to work then 8 hours later ride home 10 miles. Noticed when pulled in garage it was tapping. Shut it down checked oil now there more oil in the tank then previously and no movement of oil in tank.

Evo motors are known for the oil pump check valve (5/16" ball bearing) to allow oil past it when the bike sits for a long time. The crankcase will fill with oil, and then when it's ridden, the excess oil goes back to the tank.

The solution is to lap the check valve seat so that the ball bearing will seal better. It's also possible it won't do it again unless it sits for a long time.

Your tricking, it may just be that the lifters needed adjusted. But you have to isolate where the noise is coming from. Do you have an oil pressure gauge or oil pressure light on the bike? First place to start is see how much pressure you have.

It not a factory instrument panel. When i turn the ignition on it say "low oil" then when i start it goes off. There is no oil pressure gauge. Where is this check valve located and tapping on it is the solution??

OK, got you.

Hard to say for sure since it's a pieced together bike. Does sound like oil pump failure though. If you can post a photo of each side of the bike it'd help with suggestions as to exactly what to check and where. (oil sender location, what engine it may be, oil tank or pan, etc) Probably can't identify everything as to what it was built from, but get you close.

Need photos otherwise you're only gonna get (good) suggestions on things to check that may, or may not apply. Example: check valve leakage is irrelevant if it has an oil pan rather than a tank that's above the pump level.

Without knowing some particulars, suggestions and ideas will confuse you and anyone else trying to help.

The check valve is in the oil pump, top side under a large flat blade screw cover. The lower of the two screw covers.
I said, LAP, not TAP. Some may do that, but I don't. It may not sump oil again unless it sits a long time.

I'd suggest investing in a service manual that covers the Evo motor.
