I will be needing to replace my rear tire in the near future, and I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in going wider on the stock rim?
I am not looking for a fat rear tire, just considering my options.
I have an '86 FLHTC with wire wheels, 16 x 3. Am I stuck with the stock 130, or will a wider tire fit in the fender, between everything else that is crammed in there?
Just replaced my back tire. I have an '85 fxr and will tell you that a 140 will NOT work on a stock set-up. The widest you can use is a 130. The guy at the local bike shop tried to put a 140 on and it got in the way of the path for the drive belt. Maybe it would work if you run a chain, but otherwise... no.
For the last few years I have used Dunlop 491s on my 92 FXRS, sized MU90-16 (140mm wide). Had to cut a piece out of the belt guard so it wouldn't rub. Dunlop discontinued the 491 so I switched to a Dunlop 404 in 140/90-16. Guess what? It rubbed on my saddlebag support mount. So be careful. Just because it's marked the same size doesn't mean it is the same size.
The Indy shop had a 140 (NWW) Metzler on my 1990 FLHTCU rear but when I switched back to Harley Dunlops ( engraved wide whitewalls) I was told I had to go with 130.
you might try an avon 130 tire, it has a wider looking foot print. i put one on with no problems, it is on my softail though.
the service manager at andrae's h-d in urbana illinois is very helpful. ask for Bill.
hope this helps.
