From which part of the chassis number can I tell the difference between US or HDI? I only know 1HD and 5HD as a difference. And until the early 2000s there was only 1HD.
You are absolutely correct and I was wrong - I thought I was aware but had never noticed the pre 2000 pre fix difference - I owned a 94 softail - never noticed it there either.
I do note the parts microfiche lists HDI models so Im “assuming” there must have been something recorded at the factory unless lights / Odo’s etc were dealer fitted?
Cheers
I am quite liking the look of the standard mufflers over the screaming eagles on my bike - from my research they are the same front and rear -could you tell me if that is the case please?
Another thing, you might not know however - the part numbers are listed as 65896-95 front and rear however for international models (that issue again) it names part number 65073-98 for fron and rear…..confusing.

65887-95 US muffler front and rear. 65073-98 HDI muffler front and rear. Difference US and HDI: the HDI mufflers are 4" longer and a little quieter. There are differences in the bracket on the muffler. For the front you need 65887-98 and for the rear 65869-97. The season is over next week, then I can Unscrew the mufflers and take photos of the US mufflers and HDI mufflers and the different brackets so you can see the differences.

Once again thank you for this clarification.
I seem to have been able to locate a “good condition” pair of the 65073-98 which I am likely to purchase. Another question if I can, will I need to adjust the compufire ignition system to account for he new mufflers? Asking out of ignorance as Im not sure of the consequences of the change like there is with fuel injected bikes.
Once again Thanks

The ignition does not need to be adjusted but the carburettor may.
