Pressing the starter button only gets "clicks". Battery is okay. Headlight does not dim when "clicking" occurs. Bike will push start okay. Does this sound like the starter is kaput?
I just went thru this with my 89 lowrider. My bike did the same thing, I put the bike in the shop some 7 weeks ago and still havent gotten it back. Apparently Harley had a bad run of starters, the entire run was bad.
2 bad starters from HD and 1 bad aftermerket later I had mine rebuilt, I'm told the bike is fine now...( hoping to pick it up this week )...geet yours rebuilt man.
Had a simler problem, a friend said to shoot some contact cleaner in the starter switch on the handle bar and after doing that the damn bike started fine for about 2 weeks or after I would wash it. You might try that and see. I installed a low down switch on the starter to alliminate that problem.
Check your connections especially the grounds and buy a new starter relay before replacing any other parts,
[sm=exactly.gif]Always start with the simple/inexpensive stuff first. A loose battery connection will do it. A bad relay, loose connection to the starter, dirty or wet switch in handle bar.........
I had same problem with my 86 flht. Battery good, new starter, still just clicked at times, ended up the wiring had just got old, had a push button placed down at starter and had no problem since. The shop said they could replace the handlebar switch, but with the old wiring in a bike that old it would just still be a problem. Sometimes the handlebar switch works, but it really spins over fast with the switch right at the starter.
