The ride of the FXR is more comparable to the FLH models. They basically have the same rubber mounting system. The Dyna uses a totally different rubber mounting system, it works well.
The FXR never captured the classic look of a Harley. Many thought it was too Japanese looking when they first came out. People lovedthe ride, but didn't appreciate the look. They also didn't quiet sell as well as they were hoping either....many were either riding Softails and Electra Glides. The FXR simply didn't have the look.
I've ridden an Ultra and my FXR back to back, and I have to agree about the ride being similar, with the only difference being the front end has a lot more feel to it on the FXR.
When I park my wife's Shadow and the FXR side by side, you can see why they talk about the styling being similar, although, I suspect the Shadow was modeled on the FXR. Take a look at the frame and side panels in particular.
The FXR was one of the best handling and riding bikes HD ever made. The FXRT was a really good touring bike, it was just a little ugly.

Yea, the fairing just didn't quiet look right on a Harley. It did however work extremely well with very little buffeting. I have been told that the design of that fairing was originally designed for the Touring version of the project Nova. It looked right on the Nova.....but not quiet right on a classic Harley.
i,ve had 4 fxrt,s still have my 86 it,s not going anywhere,dependable an quick.I,ve always loved the anti-dive frontend its just getting tricky to find parts.Best ride of them all , had an emergency an had to get home fast 1168 miles in 20 hrs tired but still able to do what i had to.seems like it ought to buried with me when i go ,but i think i,ll leave it to my son.
