Howdy all. I'm new to Harley's, but I've been riding since I was twelve. This Friday I am purchasing a used '95 Ultra. I'm going to have the engine reman'd by HD and wanted to know if an oil cooler is available from HD. I do not see one listed in the accessories portion of the HD website for a '95 Ultra. I know that some folks have strong opionions on oil coolers and I really wasn't asking whether you liked 'em or not, just if there's one available for a '95 Ultra and from who. If there's not one available from HD or other aftermarket vendors I would assume that a cooler for this model is not needed or recomended, yes? Thanks for the bandwidth and I'll post some pictures late Sunday evening. Mucho thanks in advance for your thoughts!
I had the Jagg Horizontal Mount Black Oil Cooler from Dennis Kirk Part #: 491661
Manufacturer Part #: J1270 on our 1990 Ultra this summer. It worked, kept the oil cooler. I just took it off last evening because we are getting into cooler weather and we do ride in temperatures down into the 40's. I originally was going to put a cover on it but the one I bought did not fit and it was just as much work to make a cover as to take the oil cooler off. Harley does not sell one for older Ultras like mine, but Jagg is a good brand name and some of their newer models for newer Harleys have thermostat controls.
Thank you, Joe for your comments. I plan to install the same unit as you have except with a thermostat that will negate the need for a cover in colder tempertures. You might want to check out:www.jpcycles.com and look up the part number for the JAGG oil cooler thermostat so that you will not have remove your cooler each fall. Hope this helps a lettle and good to "talk with ya"!
I originally ordered an adapter as well but sent it back, the extra length put my filter well below the frame and I did not like having it stick out there increases the chances of being hit going over bumps etc. If I had a newer evo with the filter in front of the engine, the adapter with thermostat would have been the best way to go. My hoses were routed under the engine along the frame so installing the bypass switch may be a problem as well.
Ditto on th Jagg we used a vertical on my '95 Ultra (130+ hp, 140+ ftlbs) mounted it on the left side andhad my wife make a cover out of some black naughyde, works like a charm. Jagg is the class of the"working mans" oil coolers.
You have a Evo, you do not need a oil cooler. Unless you want your bike to run cold.
I have used synthetic oil since new and I also placed a oil cooler on my bike when I bought it in 89. I used to own a Shovel b4. Anyway i was smart enough to also buy a temp gauge and the oil never got to operating temp with the oil cooler installed. Even when I covered the oil cooler. After i took off the oil cooler my oil reached the right temp. Do not buy it. I live in S Florida and if I do not need it you surely do not.
For those of you that have a oil cooler on your Evo I would recommend that you get a temp gauge right away. Then Take the oil cooler off. Covering it will not work.
ORIGINAL: 89 FXRS Sorrry Bruce I may be Hi-jacking.I have a guage and an oil cooler.Wouldn`t go without either one. What is the the "operating temp." you are referring too? With my oil cooler exposed on a 85 degree day ,my bike will run 175-180 deg. with coated pistons and Amsoil 20-50.Plenty warm enough when you stop at a light and bake 2 mins. waithing for the light to change. Why do you have to put in a lower temp. thermostat to make more power in a car?Hmmm! Bruce, don`t believe all that you hear, here.I don`t think anyone ever took off their cooler because their bike ran cold.Go lockhart,Jagg. Can`t go wrong.Toby Oh Yeah, when I cover my cooler the temp goes up,imagine that.
