Default Help with fluid change!

Hi everyone, Hope your all enjoying the holidays. This is my first time changing my fluids on my 98 Road King. We'll, I can't get at the oil filter to get it off. Do I need a special tool? Also I don't have an allen wrench large enough for the transmission filler plug. Does anyone know what size it is? Guess I should have checked this out ahead of time. Live and learn Thanks. Shane

If your RK injected or carbed? The crank sensor is right behind the oil filter on the 'I's. A strap on a dog bone wrench works fine as well.

They are available at most auto stores as well. I have used this on the EVO and TC injected bikes we have.

What ever you do keep oil of(f) (sic)your engine mount at all costs. A plastic catch bag over paper towels is what I have gotten comfortable with. The crank sensor is a pain the filter swap...

Simple green clean up right away helps too.

A basic socket wrench will fit the tranny plug and oil pan plug as well. YSMV, 3/4"

I am curious why you say this " What ever you do keep oil of your engine mount at all costs."

Petroleum products like oil deteriorates rubber. Armoral which is a petroleum product eats rubbertires, eta. Do not use it.

The cap type filter sockets work best. It's made for the exact filter size. For really stuck filters, just use a large pair of vice grips or punch a large screwdriver through it and twist it off.

Not so much with the EFI's. The HD cap unit has a cut out to miss the sensor. You can't just spin it off.

In my case the lower half of the rubber mount just tore 3/4 of the way around. If you are doing your own service, check under the mount all the way round. Keep it clean.

I bought Channel-lock pliers that are shaped for large dia ( 2"-31/2" ) pipe. Work great!

Cheers... Ben.

I went out this morning and bought the HD socket with the cut out to fit by that sensor. $15 Woked great. My brother came by and brought me a 3/8 allen wrench for the tranny fill. All is well. One more question. My oil was black and definately needed a change but the tranny fluid and the primary fluid looked clean and fresh. Do they need to be changed as often as the engine oil? Thanks, Shane

No, on the tranny and primary. The reason for black oil in the motor is carbon from cyl combustion.

Compare the tranny and primary to your car tranny and rear end. Go by miles and the service manual to change thier fluids. Do not put synthetic oil in your primary.
