1991 EVO

ragrat64--couldn't agree more with you. That's terrible that the dealer didn't take that extra step, knowing INA bearings are apt to failure with aftermarket cams. BTW-nice avatar.
Wrknman-your primary chain inspection cover may not be oval, but you can see the non-round hole in front of primary cover is where you would want to look in and adjust, if you don't want to take off the primary. And you have the parts number to buy the gasket for your bike.

I realize everyone here is trying to help the guy, but the INA cam bearing keeps popping up. I posted this earlier, but the bike is a 91. The INA cam bearing did not start showing up until late 1992. There should be a Torrington in that engine.
Thanks, bigtone. I wondered if I f'ed it up when I put the new cam in my bike without changing the bearing. It looked fine so I left it alone, and that was before I knew there was a potential issue with them.
WRKNMAN,
check the compensater sprocket nut first, it is the easiest and the sound can travel and drive you nuts looking for it. Lifters can be something as obvious as the circlip popped out, dirt or worn inside allowing it to bleed down and not pump up as it should. As stated before the bearing could be going bad, replace it on principle if you open the cam chest. I would reccomend that you contact Bob Wood at Woods performance, his cams flat out make power.

Get this! I got all this crap tore off my bike, exhaust (a real b*tch) floor boards, chrome, most bolts from the cam cover, the trans. cover, and I found the dipstick was broken off in the trans. Metal all inside the trans. I wonder if the sound can be traveling to the front of the motor? (I bet it's the problem.) I just hope theres not another in the motor! Would ya'll recommend I change stuff in the motor (lifters, bearings, cam etc.) while I've got her down? Or just flush the tranny lube her up and try it?
OK...Wow! First make sure your tranny is good to go. It's really your choice on replacing stuff. I can see the pros and cons of both. I lean on just buttoning her up after you get the tranny squared away and see if that was not your problem in the first place. I hate for you to start tearing into the engine and replacing stuff that is good. I personally would be very worried about the tranny, if it was my bike. I would cahnge the oil, tranny, and primary fluids for now. Also use new gaskets and make sure you put everything together right or you will have other problems.

I was not aware that 91s did not have the INA bearing problem..However, I would put the thing back together with fresh fluids and gaskets, take Short ride to see if it clears the problem. If not, I would still think the possibility that someone changed the Cam bearing is possible, Your problem sounds SO indentical to mine that I would hate to see you go through what I did.......
I went to the dealer in a neighboring city and asked the guy about my problem. Once he explained how much was involved in the tranny I decided to let him do it. So, I took it back up to him and he's going to remove the gears clean and inspect everything, replace bearings if needed and seals. I asked him about the cam bearing scenario and he said while it was down he'd spend another 1/2 hour and make sure I had the good bearing and would let me know what cam I have. Seemed like a real nice guy (tech). I'm sure I'll be lighter in the pocket but the tech said he'd look out for me (time wise @ 60 an hour). I'm putting synthetic back in it and I'll have the peace of mind about the cam bearing.
Hey Wrknman,
That's the right thing to do. I was worried about the tranny, so I'm gladto know you took it to a pro.I recommend Royal Purple Synthetic(75-90W) in tranny. It has a purple color, so you can tell if youhave a leak in the future. Some trans leak run ontothe inner primary and it's hard to figure out. Your call, but anysynthetic is best. Maybe your Dealer tech has no choice and has to use Sync 3. It's just not for trannies, but we'll not get into that debate.
Same thing with the engine oil....Ihighly recommendsynthetic. Have him checkand adjustthe primary chain if needed, while you got it with him.
Good luck
