3.turn ignition key switch to ignition and wait about 8 seconds for a bunch of flashing of the check engine light
it will then stop for 2 seconds..get ready... these are the codes you must count:
it will slowly flash 1,2,3,5....there is NO 4....this is the first digit of the 2 digit code ..so it can only be 1,2,3,5 __ __
then a 2 second pause...then you will get second digit of the 2 digit code..it can only be 1,2,3,4,5,6
remember after the complete 2 digit code is given you will go back to the rapid flash sequence..
there are a total of 15 codes available with this procedure
examples
52,53,54,55 bad news ECM replacement
56 crank/cam sensor
11 throttle sensor
12 barometric
14 engine temp. sensor
15 intake temp sensor
23 and 32 are injectors front/rear
24 coil
33 fuel pump relay--in this case you would not hear the pump but instead waited 3 seconds after the on / off sequence

im,

I just tried this diagnostic check on a '97 Road King I'm purchasing, but the lights flash so fast I couldn't tell if I was actually getting a code or not. Is there a different procedure for the '97s?

"rapid flash sequence"
1-means the codes are cleared, that there are no stored codes, that no historical codes exist in memory.
2-this is a good thing unless the previous owner is very knowledgeable and is also dishonest and disconnected the battery cables to clear the codes, or disconnected the correct fuse to clear the codes..but even then the nost common code is the #56 and
it popes up after any bad start.

if it has rapid flash sequence..it is so fast that you can not count the flashes...it is GOOD...if it has a real code it will have the rapid flash and then a real slow blink.blink.blink.blink.blink then stop for 2 seconds then blink.blink.blink.blink.blink.blink then rapid flash then next code or it repeats again..the above would be code #56

im,

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought I had seen a 1 or 2 flash after the rapid sequence, but wasn't sure if my eyes were playing tricks on me. I figured if I didn't actually see a definitive slow flash, I was probably ok. And as far as the owner being very knowledgeable......not a chance.
