Default Looking at a 99' Road King Classic L.E. Need Input

Hello all knowing! I am currently a Sporty owner and I am making the move to a bigger bike. Trying to keep the wife happy! Now, here are the questions...

I found a local bank repo 99' Road King Classic Limited Edition. It's in great shape with only 14K miles on it. I have looked at it and I'm happy with what I see. Now, I have had a couple people tell me to be careful about this year since it was the first year for fuel injections and also about an engine bearing failure that is possible. Is this true? Are there any other things I should be looking out for?

Anyway, I knew I could get some great info on here.

Thanks again!

I have a 99 Road King Classic FI. Have owned it for 5 years with zero problems. If your comfortable with the price then go for it.

The first year for injection was 1995, on the FLTCU, Tour-Glide. Not 99. The only real considerations you should have is, 1) the type of injection unit they used on your bike was the first type, it's name was "Magnelli-Moretti", also referred to these days as an "M&M" unit. These were half-decent but were not that great and harley dropped em, I think in 2002 and switched to the current unit which is a "Delphi" type, named after the division of GM that makes it. These are better and use a MAP,(manifold-absolute-pressure), system to meter the fuel, instead of just TPS-"throttle position sensor, as in the M&M,(a little more accurate). Problem with the M&M's now is I don't believe you can get maps or downloads for them, so your kinda stuck with em....2), the real concern you should have is to find out if the 99 you're lookin at has had the correct cam-bearing installed to rectify the stock set up for 99-early2000 which was an improper application of a certain type of bearing in the cam dept which could fail and most were replaced along the way but some weren't cause harley never did a recall on em and only fixed em on a case-by-case basis. If no one can prove to you that it was done then try do get the price of the bike down based on the cost of a dealer doin the swap,(probably $300 or so)...Joe Mac

Thanks for the info guys! I knew I could get straight answers here... I'm hoping that the local cycle shops all throw in low ball prices which I'm assuming they will. This way, I can pick it up at a under retail price.

if you start having FI problems with the M&M you could always throw a carb on it.
