Cam change ?
Evenin guys.
Just got a Andrews EV27, to go in my stage 1 WG. On the instruction sheet that came with the cam, they mention jetting up to 48/195. Right now I'm running 45/175 and I'm only see'ing 35.5 mpg. I've been switching back and forth between a red anodised adjustable needle that came in the carb, (possibly Yost?) and a 88 sportster needle, but my milage does'nt change, and the plugs look good.
I'm thinking my fuel mileage is realy going to take a nosedive if I swap to these recomended jets. Any advice?
Cheers... Ben.

the 45/175 should be Ok with your set up unless you are running more than 10:1 compression. Try it and read the plugs. It's probably your right wrist that is giving you the terrible mileage, or somebody put in a light spring and drilled out the slide so that it opens faster, which will hurt your mileage.
Thanks John. I'm not planning on uping the compression at this time. Dont think I ride too hard, but the drilling out the slide and weaker spring is a definate possibility I will inspect, because judging by the red needle, someone ahead of me has been into the carb.
I would go to an absolutely stock CV carb, and I think either one from an Evo or one from a TC88 would work fine, and use the 88-89 1200 needle in the idle jet with no other changes. The "Thunder-Tube" type carb kits make the carb disastrously rich. You should be able to get mid to upper 40s for fuel mileage. I have an Evo with a carb as described, free-flowing air cleaner and mufflers, and an EV13 cam and I run 47 to 51 mpg.
As an alternative, if you want to spend a little more money, get a Mikuni 42mm carb, and get the mileage kit for it. The Mikuni will perform better than the CV, but the CV is still an excellent carb and you should be able to get a "take-off" for a good price.

Ben, I just picked my bike up from the Indy this weekend. I have a 98 Fatboy and had him install the EV27 cam. The bike was mostly stock with K&N filter, and long shot pipes. The best mileage I would get was around 45 mpg if I stayed around 55 other than that I usually got 38/39 mpg (I do not ride it hard). When he did the cam he installed 45 and 185 jets, which he said he has found to be the best starting point for that cam and bike. The weather and roads are not cooperating so it will probably be a few weeks before I get a real chance to test drive it and check mileage. I did do a short couple miles on it when I brought it home and it certainly feels like a totally different bike.

Havent had a chance to ride it yet. The weather here is supposed to turn cold through the middle of next week. So hope to be able to get a ride in late next week. I'll post after that.

I would pull off your bowl and check for any modifications. Dynojet kit or whatever just to look. Mid 40's should be no problem with a relatively stock bike. My fatboy i have a sportster needle and 45/175 jetting and pull in the 40's.
Well, hopefully I've solved that little issue by throwing more money at it
. Ordered a new Mikuni HSR 42.
I've read an article by Joe Minton on this carb, where he recomends a 'mileage maker kit' he developed for this carb. The kit includes a leaner pilot jet, leaner needle, and much leaner accelerator pump nozzle.
Anyone running this carb & kit? Is this kit designed for a stock motor, and would be too lean on a stage one motor with cam?
Cheers... Ben.
