Default EVO pipes???

Hi guys. I could use a little help with an evo I just bought. I have the 80" on a 1989 FLHTC and I was wondering if I could use pipes from any of the newer bikes so I can lose my slash cut pipes that came with it? I had an 88" FXDL last year with 16" apes on it(looked great) but sucked on the highway. So I got the bagger this year and am realizing it needs a little work. Anyone have some extra saddle bag lids???? Mine seem to be missing.....

Also, would the new flat paint on that bike offend anyone since its an older guy? It has to be painted.

Default pipes

your newer pipes are the same as the old evo pipes. if you have O2 ports either weld them or plug them some how. I have had to "modify" some of the mounts but it was very easy. most work without mods.

Later pipes fit, I have a set on my 1990 bike. If you fit slip-on mufflers you will also need the later type, to fit onto the pipes. Originally your bike and mine had a flared end to each pipe with a matching feature on the mufflers. These are not interchangeable with the later pipes.

I think the 89 is similar to the 90. I recommend switching to newer headers and mufflers, but would not recommend headers from the 2009 models because some of them have cats built into the headers. I have an O2 sensor plug in my rear header and an O2 sensor in the front one hooked up to a real time air/fuel ratio gauge. Most newer style mufflers will slide over your current header pipes if you saw the very end off, all you want to remove is the flared end that sticks up, you will need to change to a newer style muffler clamp.

I think J&P sells replacement lids and you may still be able to get latches. The paint on our '90 stills looks pretty good but I often say that if things went downhill I would be tempted to use black primer, but that may not look as good with a lot of chrome - but then I did not see any done that way, so I don't know if I would like it or not. Black primer, leather bags, one of those short dark windshields, with no tourpak might not look bad either, so many things to consider, if you are like me you will make changes, thinking you will like it and then end up changing it again.

on edit: The crowd that hangs around the dealership will have totally different ideas on what looks good, there is a lot of peer pressure to buy new, and conform to their accepted ways. Older evo owners tend to do better elsewhere but the further you get away the harder it is to come back. If the guys on the newer Harleys are offended you can drop in a big inch Ultima and laugh at them in your rear view mirror.

I think "they" made some kind of radical change in '07 and you need to stay away from pipes newer than that. And, I'm assuming you're talking about stock exhaust? Otherwise, the aftermarket guys sell "systems" for 95-07 and they should all work, as the only difference is the muffler attachment, like stated in an earlier post.

You can get the o2 sensor plug by using the plug from the Vrod. It screwes in, put some blue thread locker on it. Cost a couple of bucks.

I think 07 & 08 have O2 ports and as previously noted they sell plugs. I think the shields are a little different. The 1990 shields did not line up good with the 2008 headers, they bend the new pipes just a little different to better fit the bigger cylinders.

I bought a stock 2007 FLHX street glide exhaust off ebay. Headers, mufflers, heat shields for $98.00 delivered to my door. Bolted right up but had to remove the bracket off the starter mount. I bought O2 plugs from the dealer and just added a bit of lock tite and put them in. I can now put any usual A/M muffler if I want.

Default Thx

You guys are a great help. I'm gonna try to get some pipes off ebay and then find some slip ons to help out. I could use some more noise than stock but i noticed when on the highway for a while behind a guy with true duel thunder h's, I go deaf. I'm thinking supertrapps with a bigger cam since I have the s&s shorty carb on it. Word on the street is that I need to check out my bearings while i'm in there......

Thinking also about the dark cobalt blue that is just a hair darker and the flat finish. Gonna ditch the tour pack but paint it anyhow in case I'm on a road trip. Can the newer seats fit on these with some mods or do those not fit too well???

OMG, you used the "C" word. So be prepared for lots of replies from people shoving an EV-27 down your throat

They didn't start putting the crap bearings in there until 92-93, somewhere in there so you should be safe on that. But if you swap the cam, replace it anyway. 85 thru 95 seats will bolt right on. Some people have "fitted" later models with some degree of modification.
