Looking at a 1985 EG for about $8900 can. Not sure on millage yet but I believe its a one owner bike, seen it on the web. How does the 1985 model compare to the newer EVO's? Was there any signifigant changes in the bike motor or otherwise. Are parts interchangeable from the 85 up? Advantages or disadvantages.
Pretty sure that was the cost of the bike new If it's pristine maybe $ 7000 Lots of changes after 1989 The early EVO's did have a great motor I've seen a 1987 at the shop with 97,000 miles No engine work !!
I recommend looking for `90 or later, the `85 has the old starter design, and tapered mainshaft in the transmission, which can sometimes be a weak spot, and is more difficult to remove/install.
`89 got the new starter design, `90 added the splined shaft transmission.
$8900 in Canada is not bad, depending on the Km's. I'd still talk him down to <$8k if poss (I paid 6k just before Christmas, but no tourpac, radio, etc). It's true the 89+ starters and 90+ mainshaft are sturdier, but as long as you have fairly stock comp you should be ok. Plus you won't have to deal with the weak cases produced from approx '89 to '93. Better a starter than a bottom end. You could always swap out the mainshaft, starter, inner/out primary and clutch later if you want. JMHO.
A lot of great points. I went last nite to see one of my buddies, I had thought he had sold his 85 EG but to my surprise he still had it and was going to got to be selling it so I got to see one up close. His bike has 106000 km and motor never touched, I did notice some seapage and there's no tunes in the fairing, bike needs alot of TLC. His bike has been lowered as well and with me being 5-8" is tempting and felt good sitting on it.
He wants 10 grand for it which is kinda cheap, and really it makes me nervous dealing with friends.
85 electraglide for 10G cheap? Maybe I clicked on the wrong button but KBB says 6690, in excellant condition, just lookin out for a fellow biker.
Maybe it would help if you posted your location ridemywg. I assume from the OP ($8900 can) you are from Canada. Everything costs more here. So $8900 is not bad depending on condition. $10k is a bit high, but I haven't seen that many BT Evos listed lower.
I paid $6500 US for my '87 last fall and it only has 30,000 miles and in nice shape. I had to put a stereo in it and I found the original tourpack for it (I need to update my pics) and am very happy with it. I have under $7500 in it now.
