Default V.o.e.s

Any of you ever changed the V.O.E.S (vacuum operated electric switch) on your bike? I have a service manuel, but it doesn't explain in much detail how to change it out. There seems to be a round clip holding it in place, but I'm not sure how to get that clip off.

Do you know for sure it went out? Some times the hose gets brittle and you loose suction. It should be visible to where it's mounted. check by or connected to your top motor mount. The tabs on the metal bracket are one way. With a little force it'll pop right out. You MAY have to remove one side of your tank but, not always.

I haven't bought a VOES from HD lately, but they used to come with the retaining ring. If not purchase one if you find out that you really need to replace it. I've only seen a couple go bad over my time of dealing with them.

Thay was my concern. I normally just have to replace a hose or the ground wire broke but, they are replaceable. Last one i got from HD, had the clip with it. I picked up an after market that did'nt have one.

No I'm not sure if the V.O.E.S. is bad or not yet. This is a thread I started in another part of the forum a while back asking for help in figuring out what is wrong with my bike.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/engin...ator-help.html

I have since had the intake gaskets replaced by an Indy and replaced the entire carburator myself. I'm still having the same problems. I'm grasping at straws here.

Also, now it won't hold a steady idle even after being warmed up. It will idle fast, then slow, then speed back up again and does that sparaticaly. You can also feel it cutting in and out a little at a steady speed of about 45 miles per hour in forth gear, just cruising. Not bad, but just enough you can feel it. The truely odd thing is about every fourth time I ride it, it runs great, like nothing is wrong with it. Then the next time I ride it, it begins to act up again.

The way i check a voes, i use a brake bleeder and hook it up to where the hose comes out. Pull the hose off and check for cracks. I pump for vacuum and if the gauge goes down, it's bad.

are you sure the intake manifold is properly snugged at the heads and carb? I had an annoying problem that didn't really show up with the usual spray method, and once I checked the manifold tightness it turned out both sides were a little loose

also my VOES hose was cracked

two simple fixes. maybe?

The hose is good. I forgot to mention I checked that already. I'll try checking it with a vacuum pump. How many inches of vacuum did you pull on it, and I'm understanding I'll just be watching for it to lose vacuum? I appreciate you guys trying to help me out with this.

I just had the intake seals changed, but I did recheck the bolts and they are snug. I also replaced the seal that seats the carb to the intake, and it seems to be seated well there too. I'm going to check the VOES with a vacuum pump as soon as I can.

Yes. For loss of vacuum. 5"-10" should be fine. A few pumps of the handle. But, You'll know right off the bat. Every time you release off the the trigger, it'll go down. Also, don't know if you know how to check for intake seal leak. Start your scoot. Let it idle if you can or keep it at idle via your throttle and spray a little contact/brake clean on your intake seals from the primary side making sure you don't over spray into your a/c. If it go hi/low, they did'nt seat properly. Personally i use vasoline on the seals before i install to stop them from buckling when slid into place. If you already knew that...Disregard.
