ive seen the push button starter covers and thought it seemed like a good idea as a backup in case the switch on the controls ever quit working for whatever reason. just wonder how hard it is to install. seems like all you do is remove the old and screw the new one on. is it that simple.
Yep,
Was on my 93, took the old screws out and installed the PB cover. Don't loose a screw though, mine were metric. Bought stainless ones so they wouldn't rust.
My Low Rider tossed a relay and I had to push start the old girl once. So I installed one. Damn if I haven't needed the thing since. Easy to install, but I had to take the battery out to get my hands in there.
i figured for $15.00 its cheap insurance, better to have it and never need it than to not have it and need it.
HotRod... there's another thread on this, but be aware that if you push the button, you starter WILL crank, as it's directly connected to the battery. Some people don't like that, but it doesn't bother me.
I have one on Bertha, and I was having to use it with the old starter after the solenoid began not pulling the plunger in reliably, even after I put in a new plunger kit. Got a new Ultima starter last summer, but I swapped the button to it from the old starter... as you said, it's cheap insurance!
i realize that if you push the button, weather the key is on or off, the starter will crank. just cheap insurance if the button doesnt work.
Absolutely! But in another thread on this, I pointed that out and some people said they wouldn't have one because of that, so I just wanted to make sure you are aware of it. Doesn't bother me one bit that it would crank... if somebody came up and pushed that little button on Bertha, the engine cranking would be the least of their concerns!
I've had one on my bike as a backup for several years. Never needed it, but it is nice to know it's there.....Tip: They have an o-ring and a bit of grease as a seal. Even so, I still put a balloon on the button like a condom when I'm washing the bike and am going to be spraying that area with a hose.
the only downside would be some idiot pushing the button while it was parked in gear, but then i figure where its located most people wouldnt even know what it was.
