WEll, I dug into the bike this weekend and found exactly what I thought - the cheap stator I bought had fried. Half of it was black as coal and stuff was melted all over the place. The other half looked almost new.
Anyway, enough of buying cheap parts. I did order an Accel replacement - mostly because I have always found their parts to be top quality and they have served me well. So I actually sat here pondering it and decided i was going to be brand loyal and hope that my personal integrity would pay off in the big karma picture - fingers crossed.
When I was pulling off the front gear, I noticed that the cup that covers the gear had 4 indentions in it. Three of the indentions look like they were punched into it to keep and interior part in place, but the fourth one is a bit suspect. Not sure if I somehow did it (I really don't think so) or if it is factory. It doesn't really do anything to the cup - it still fits nicely and all. But I am wondering if it is normal or if someone messed it up trying to hold the gear while they loosened that big old bolt. Any thoughts?
Replaced my stator this spring and it was the same way. I put an accel in mine as well and grommet was super tight fit and had to give it a smear of oil.

Dan, it's hard to say what's up with that without a pic, but that cup is the compensator spring pack or "washer" as the manual calls it. It has heavy spring steel beveled washers inside and the crimps simply hold it all together. Not recommended though I do all the time, if you re-use the stator bolts, clean them good and use medium (blue) Loctite and on the compensator nut also.
Thanks guys. I think it is factory like that as I really don't see how it could have gotten bent in without a serious whack from a hammer - no real noticable mark on the whack-side - or some kind of press which makes no sense at all.
I'll use the loctite for sure. Hope to be riding again this weekend.
