Default Baker Tranny!

My tranny main bearing and main shaft finally bit the dust after 23 years and somewhere between 140,000 and 180,000 miles. I decided to get a Baker to go with the new crate motor, and try for another 140,000+ miles. Wanted to get the kicker option, but it isn't (directly) available for an '87 Sloptail. It can be done, and Baker was willing to do it for me, but the expense was more than I can bear at this time. I did get the N1 option; that puts neutral below 1st instead of betwixt 1st & 2nd. That will be nice with the suicide and hand jammer. Total cost, including a sprocket (free) and shipping (free) is about $2400.

The old tranny will rest alongside the old motor until I can get them rebuilt to be used in the late 70's-framed garbage barge I want to build.

I'm stoked! And it's gonna be a long 2+ weeks so I'm glad I have the Nighty to run.

Cool but 2 weeks is going to be a long time during 'riding season.' Interesting you went with the N-1 even with jockey, Old habits die hard (lookin for N). I rode a jockey 1 time and really didn't like it, but to each his own. Not knocking it, just not me.
Oh yeah, 5 or 6 or 6DD?

They only make 1 tranny for the '87 model if you want to keep the original starter, so it's the 5 speed. The N1 is perfect for a jockey just because of what you said - ease of finding neutral. Got an e-mail yesterday that it has already shipped, so I'll get it earlier than expected.

You cannot go wrong with Baker...I put a 6 in a 4 speed case(with the kicker) on my 84...best thing I ever did to it. 86-88 Softail is an "orphan" primary for Harley...kind of wonder why you didn't up-grade while you were spending that kind of coin.

I wish all motorcycles had neutral at the bottom, and all gears up. Much easier on the rider, and safer, IMO.

Didn't upgrade because of the extra coin. Would have to get another inner primary, outer primary, clutch hub, starter motor/jackshaft assembly. The clutch hub would be from Primo as I run a primary belt. Then I'd have to whack the snot out of the outer primary as I run the belt in a home-made semi-open set-up.

6th gear is not an overdrive, same final ratio as a 4 or 5 speed: 1 to 1

I didn't know about the '87 model, nice to know. Sounds like you'll be up in no time. Build right, ride safe!
