Default carb backfire, 86 fxstc

Under acceleration my bike hiccups once or twice through the carb. I havnt taken it apart yet but any suggestions as far as adjustments or should I just buy a carb rebuild kit and go through it?

Is this the stock carb? We used to call it "Keihin Pop." It is because the carb is total junk (when new) and is too lean. If you work really, really hard, you can get that carb to be "fair." Start with a rebuild kit and probably the next size bigger main jet.

I ran one for years with good results except poor fuel mileage. The factory "compliance" fittings (rubber elbows that bolt to the head) are bad to crack and leak, though replacements seem to hold up rather well. A bad accelerator pump will cause the mentioned symptoms. So if it starts and idles well, I'd vote for a new pump. If it pops and spits when starting, suspect the compliance fittings.

I plan on tearing into it this weekend if the weather allows! Hell like heat here, If it gives me too many hassels I may just go with a S&s kit from J&P becouse I need a new air cleaner set up. Thanks for the info!

Replacing that POS with a S&S would be your best bet. Keep in mind that the jets that the kits come with are not going to work. You have to tune it. Post on here for some jet suggestions if you go S&S.
