i have a problem, that my bike floods out ez...then i see gas on the floor.....so i was going to rebuild the carb.....it is stock(i think) so who makes a good rebuild kit... or should i just go with a new carb?
Sounds like the float is sticking ...you can sometimes just tap on the carb body with a screwdriver handle. If that doesn't work you are probably due for a rebuild or you can just remove the float bowl and reinstall it, that usually releases the float.
About 6 months ago I rebuilt my 1986 keihin butterfly carb. I used the custom chrome rebuild kit...It seemed decent except for the gasket for the float bowl was a little too big and wouldn't seal good until I played with it to make it fit...so I had to buy that gasket seperately from harley, p/n 27324-83, $3.95.
Most people buy the allen screw kit for the float bowl when rebuilding it...I got it from J&P cycles.
I have stuck with my stock carb but the newer Keihin CV carb is highly recommended by many for an economical upgrade.
I forgot to mention, connected to the float is the float valve that seals off the fuel supply...you can replace this valve, it comes in the rebuild kits or you can buy it seperately and just replace it, 27886-78.
on my 85 the stock float valve was 3 sided. at about 20 years old it started to stick and gas would flow out of the overflow tube. i went to get a new valve and the new one was 4 sided. the float sticking stopped and i haven't had a problem since. i think the 4 sided one fits in the tube better. it wasn't cheep but it fixed the problem.
I rebuilt mine once, but it was clean as a pen even after sitting nearly 8 years and didn't need a thing. It dumped fuel out immediately after that and I messed with it a bunch but couldn't make it stop. Finally rode it and shut the petcock off as soon as I stopped everytime and sometimes in between and let it "run out" off and on for about a 100 miles, never acted up again. (???)
But I did change to a CV in 06 and I'd highly recommend it for mileage. And though not exactly original, most people can't tell the difference and it is "correct" for the engine... somewhat. The butterfly was much better on a cold start and go though. But I've gotten used to the difference now and it's second nature now.
I've never bought from them, I just found them in the search engine.
After taking a closer look at that website, even though they say they carry some oem parts, I don't know if this one is a genuine harley oem part. The kit may be obsolete since I didn't find it when I searched some of the dealer sites.
