Hello all,
I have a bone stock 97 dyna lowrider with about 10,000 miles on it. It ran perfect from the beginning of summer until about a month ago when I parked it. I am thinking that the carb may have a clogged jet or something. I am getting spark to both cylinders but only the rear one seems to be firing. When I feather the choke it will run but it wont idle on its own with the choke in all the way. Can anyone help me resolve this?
Pull the air cleaner, make sure it didn't get a visit from a rodent. Intake leaks can also act like a bum carb; if that bone stock bike never had the intake manifold or headers pulled, could be seal leaks messing up the mixture. Pull the carb bowl and see if there's any sediment in there; little grit in the bottom and you could easily have a clog or two. You'd just about have to pull the carb to do a good cleaning.
When removing the carb, get yourself a rebuild kit, which will come with all the perishable parts so you can replace them and restore it to rude health.
It will most likely be the pilot jet is dirty/clogged. Clean the pilot jet, pilot circuit and idle jet & circuit. That will almost always be your issue. You may or may not need the rebuild kit, but like grbrown said, it's good to have. If you end up not needing the rebuild kit this time around you'll have it for next time, cause these are motorcycles and there will most likely be a next time... :-)
