Default electrical gremlins

Went to start my 98 electriglide, turned the ignition switch and everything looked good. Pushed the starter button and the lights went out and no noise from the relay or starter. It act like theirs a direct short at the starter swtch, don"t know if that"s true or not.I just got this bike, it has 40,000 miles on it. I tried to get to the battery but the seat has bolts on each side along with the back scew.Anyone know how to get to those side bolts so I can get the seat off!! Battery has a full charge, need help thanks.

There are lots of threads in this section on starter and electrical issues. Before you start digging, I'd suggest a H-D service manual for your bike. It will have wiring diagrams and troubleshooting info you will need. It will also tell you how to get the seat off.

Without going any further, it sounds like you have a short to ground somewhere. Good luck.

Probably a bad battery or a bad ground cable or main connector from the battery to the starter solenoid. But most likely a bad battery.

I am not familiar with your bike, but on mine, a 7/16" geared box end wrench takes those two seat bolts off in no time at all.

Hess is right (again so I'm learning ... lol).

Those bolts take a ratcheting box end to get under the seat and turn them.

My bike is earlier than yours, but you may find it easier to get the seat off if you take the saddlebags off first. As Uncle G suggests, get yourself a factory service manual for your bike, avoid the other brands of manual.
