Another Cam Question...
Hey guys, I know it gets beaten like a dead horse but I just want to get a few suggestions based on riding style on what cam I can install in the old 80" EVO.....
Firstly, it's a '94 Fatboy with less than 10,000 original miles.......has an S&S super E carb, K&N filter, V+H Big Radius Pipes (sans baffles).
I'm pretty sure it just has the stock ignition but can't remember off the top of my head and it's in storage right now.......in either case it's getting one of the Dynatek 2000 single fire ignition systems anyway in the spring as well.
When I do the cam I'm going to change the lifters (S&S), go with a Torrington Cam Bearing, and change to adjustable push rods so in the future things are a little easier.
NOW, let the debate begin..............I generally ride solo and alot of times I'm on the throttle racing around with pals/etc having fun. Occasionally the old lady is on the back for some small tours...but not that often........ So I'm looking for the best (opinions of course) bolt in cam for this style of riding to get the most out of the motor. Right now it definitly needs a little boost.
-----Once I have the ignition, cam, and all other doo-dads on in the spring I'll take it in for a dyno and set-up (Jetting, etc).

Alright, I'm Hiijacking my own thread.......sort of......
After reading more in articles/etc..... I really want to surprise myself when I pull the old girl back out of storage next spring so now I'm looking at changing the heads over. Next questions are....
I'm looking at the HD Screaming Eagle 1340 upgraded heads ---- Opinions? Like-Dislike? Better Options?
Should be around 9.5 - 1 with stock pistons from what I'm reading.
This will be in conjunction with above (changing out the cam).
NOW, with these heads does how much is this going to affect the cam decision? Is valve clearance going to be an issue with these heads if I go with and EV 27 or Wood 6?
Also, can I get an estimate on what jetting I should be looking at in a S&S Shorty E carb with this type of set up?
And, and, (I know, lots of questions) am I going to require clutch upgrades to account for the additional hp/tq? And what am I going to need.

The SE heads are good heads for your lighter bike and good bang for the buck BUT I found that stock heads redone/ported by respected engine builders come out with a wider power range.
The SE's have valve spring limitations of 575 lift and most reworked stock heads come with around 630 lift springs so the SE's are limited to only a few cams but the EV27, W6 and some Andrews cams will work fine with them and a 585-590 lift cams can go with the reworked heads which opens up alot of choices.
SE's are 9.5-1 with flat tops and reworked heads can equal the same with milling and a .030 head gasket and that is where the competent head engine builder comes in. Valve clearance isn't and issue with flattops even up into the 590 cams (W6H) The best advice I can offer is contact a professional and let him help you set up your engine, the Evo is a simple engine but it takes experiance to get it right the first time, I thought I was doing things correct until a Harley guru named John Sachs pointed me in a direction on engine buiding and I turned my parts and proceedures over to him, I made the right choice for this riding season.

I believe your stock clutch will be fine. SE heads will be a GOOD boost.
I will be going with the Woods W6 cam, (have heard some who had the EV-27 switched to the W6 and could feel the difference) BUT I'm sure everyone has their preference.
I'm also getting adjustable push rods, cam bearing and new lifters (probably HD "B" type), maybe an oil pump to be safe after my lifter failure, and stock heads for now.
As for the jetting it really depends on your heads and pipes in the end. I'd run it as is and see how it feels till you can judge which way you need to go.
The S&S jetting chart for the E Shorty shows a Stock to Mild 80": .028-.031 Intermediate and .068-.076 Main
Hope this helps.
1997 bagger.......good advice!
Have your OEM heads done.....more 'meat' in them and they can be made to flow better than the SE heads...32 thousands squish - to be safe.
Use your flat top pistons, but keep your compression in the 9.5:1 range.....mine has no base gaskets - the barrels were 'lapped in' to the cases - no leaks. Let your head porter know what you want for compression.
An EV27 with a Torrington bearing, a steel breather gear, and adjustable push rods will do the trick for you.
Your carb is ok, or the original CV is good too - with a tweak.
Dual fire ignition is good, with a SE type ignition module that will let you rev to 6000.....
Stock clutch will handle this mod
This is classed as a 'mild' mod to the Evo, and will let your motor enjoy a long life.....the stock Evos have some 'easy' horsepower to be had with these mild mods.......enjoy!

Thanks a TON guys.....I think that what I'm going to do is go with the Woods 6 Cam, Torrington Bearing, Steel Breather Gear, Adjustable Rods, New Lifters, Ignition (Crane or Possibly Dynatek 2000), Wires/Plugs, etc....and keep the Shorty 'E'
And I'm going to investigate getting my stock heads worked based on the above set-up and riding style.
NEXT problem.....I'm going to have to search for a reputable machinist that has worked on upgrading EVO heads around my area. Which is central Saskatchewan, Canada......
- If anyone knows the contact info for a really reputable builder/machinist, I'm not afraid to ship them out. Bagger1997???? - What about your guy? (and thanks again)
Also, I'll post more pics of my scoot on my profile for any intersted in looking.....the most interesting part is the custom seat that I had stitched by a crazy talented leather worker named Martin Basurto!
