If the oil level is fine before draining, and you only get a little out, then how much are you adding when you change it?? If you are only adding a little then your drain is clogged. If you are adding 3-4 qts. and it only reads full after just draining, then something isn't adding up.
Fellas I got to clarify things here. I change my oil every 5000 km. The last two times is when the oil drained has not been the normal amount. Primary oil is changed once a season so no need to worry about me being confused on which plug to pull. After talking to a couple of buddies that are mechanics at local indy shops they have said that it could be one of two things. Valve seals or worn piston rings. My post was to see what some of you guys thoughts were as I have gotten alot of great advice and knowledge from this Evo forum. Thanks for the input and I will keep you posted on what's going on.
I'm curious as well on this one, read the posts about using oil, but the plugs look good. The oil has to be going somewhere! Maybe look under the bike, a slight leak when hot and running down the road may be the culprit. I read that your garage floor is clean. Seems really odd to use that much oil and not find any signs.
I tried to do a search to find out how much oil that would be burned per/hour/mile/ etc. and came up with ziltch. Maybe just burning that much between changes? Such a small amount that you wouldn't notice out the pipes? Seems like you would feel a difference in power if this came about fairly quickly.jmho.
just to humor us, check your primary oil level now. See if it's over full. If you have a leaking crank seal, oil from your engine will travel into your primary.
A positive test is to use ultra violet dye in your engine oil. After a good long ride, you test your primary oil with a black light.
...the last few times I've changed the oil there has been hardly any oil when I pull the plug.
You need to quantify that statement. My idea of 'hardly any oil' is that there was less than 8oz (227ml) of oil going into the drain pan. My FLHS holds 4 qts of engine oil. If you were burning 3.75 qts every 5000 KM's (3100 miles) you would surely notice it. Your lifters would also be telling you...
With 30,000 KM (roughly 19,000 miles) on the RK, the EVO is nicely broken in. Do another oil change, ride 1600 KM's (1000 miles), and check your oil level. If the bike is 1 qt (900ml) low, and your jeans aren't soaked with 20w50, then: Do the suggested tests to determine the internal health of the engine.
