Temptation dilemma
I have one of each, a '96 FLHR and a 2010 Ultra. The only time I ride the Ultra any more is when the Mrs. wants to go to the beach for the weekend. She won't get on the Road King, something about the size of the pillion, or.. something like that.
Anyway, I told her, if anything happens to me but I'm not dead, and she needs cash, sell the Ultra.

I've looked at some of the new bikes too. The warranty means nothing to me since I do most of my own work on my bikes. I ride with guys who run brand new iron and they're nice but, not nice enough to shell out that kind of money, let alone take out a loan. I'd never take out a loan for a bike, car or truck.

Some people really enjoy having the latest and greatest, nothing wrong with that. I bought my '98 FXD new, and after all the years gone by I still enjoy looking at her as well as riding her, plus I feel as if I'm still getting to know the bike. For example yesterday I removed the gas tank for the first time which was a learning experience. I figure as long as I can still find parts I can keep the bike running as well as looking great. I like the simplicity of being carbed too. It's possible that someday I might want a bigger bike with more amenities (fairing, saddlebags, etc.) but so far I'm still good. It's a happy marriage.
a good friend of mine came over to my shop a week ago and fell in love with my 08 streetglide and he asked me what i have tied up in it. okay, fine. i told him 19 grand for the bike, another 4k in the motor, another 3k in chrome stuff. this guy is a big concrete contractor and he can write a check for almost anything, and he asks, so would you sell it for what you got in it? i pondered the thought and then i came to the realization that all i'd do with the money is go out and buy a new streetglide and go through all the process to make it just like the one i would have sold to him. i'm very happy with my streetglide so i told him, and i know this is dumb on my part. no Lee, it's not for sale. our bikes become very good friends of ours. mine is almost like a family member to me. think about this when you're considering selling your old friend. i'm trying to recapture some of my youth recently by building an old evo fxr. you have the same dilema that i just experienced holster maker. good luck, and make the right decision.
