You would think the pump would draw more amp if the filter was stopped up. Do know since your systems seem to be a little different then my 04 but the first to go on it if the filter is stopped up is the idle. FI is exact opposite of a carb with float. With carb it runs out at top end. FI will also but you will notice the idle first since it depends on a set pressure (about 55 I think off my head) once filter stops up the idle must be maintained by throttle opening and it will die as you pull up to a stop if you do not open throttle with a restricted filter.

I found time to replace the fuel filter today.....

The cold idle is still perfect, but now the hot idle is on the low side....perhaps 700 RPM. Beginning to wonder if the dirty fuel filter had had anything to do with it? No big deal though, I'll get get this set....

Anyways, I rode it for awhile close to the house.....just in case it died again. It worked just like it should and ran perfect.

In the shop and out of curosity.....I checked for codes again. This time, it came up with code 33 which is the fuel pump relay. Is it possible a failing relay can blow a fuse? I just don't know?

I know the relays on the bike are all original from 1998 and with 80,000+ miles........replace as insurance or......?

Fuel filter partially clogged....draw too much amp blowing fuse. Sounds plausible to me.
Bad Relay or failing relay....blowing fuse......I have no clue.

OK, here we go. Cloged/partially cloged filter can cause a couple of things. First as previously stated it can make the pump labor and heat up as the pumps are cooled by the fuel around and going through it. Secondly a small piece of grit may have found it's way into the pump and seized it momentarily causing the pump to blow the fuse. Either of the above would increase the load on the electrics, which in turn could damage the relay and blow the fuse. Clear the codes and put a new one in and recheck the codes. Hope this helps.

Default Fuse pump keeps blowing

Hey EVOrider,

I am going through the same issue right now. I :

1. Replaced fuel pump
2. Gone through all wiring, no open wires
3. Only Blows in gear when at a low rpm, and I snap the throttle
4. I just recently installed a thunder header and big shot tuner

I was hoping you found out what happened with yours and could shed some light. I have a 98 FLHTCUI-I.

Thanks,

James, add a new ground wire to your fuel system electronics. If it blows a fuse when you hit the throttle, there isnt enough ground to flow the power increase you put on it! I would guess from the relay to ground is where it is lacking enough grounding!
Hatch.

Would a clogged injector dead head the pump and cause the fuse to blow?

I am not familiar with the EFI HDs. But as a boiler operator I know if I have 2 boilers online and one goes to little or no feed if my bypass is not opened my feedwater pump will start to deadhead and the amp draw will increase. If both boilers go to 0% feed my pump will trip. You say you are not getting fuel sometimes in 6th gear when you crack into throttle. Could this be an injector failing or a filter problem? Low feed to the cylinders would cause an amp increase and possibly a pump trip. May be out in space on this, but I just thought it may help.

Default Harley wiring harness replacement plug pin clips

Does anyone know where to get wire end pins for the plugs? I need to replace my ground wire going from my relay to my ECM.

Thanks

Thanks for the input Hatchetman. I took a closer look at my service manual and found that if I test the b/wt wire with the run switch on from the relay, and it lights up with a test light I need to replace that ground wire. Now I just need to find out where to get the new ends for my new ground.
