Default Arrgh!!!

Finally felt up to gettin' out to the shop and workin' on the sled. Zanotti's gave a great deal on the new tranny sprocket I needed, but it turns out it ain't a direct replacement. Instead it's a kit with a new seal, spacer, improved sprocket, improved nut, and a weird lock washer dealie.

I didn't need a new seal, so I tried slipping the sprocket on. No deal, as there aren't any threads for the nut to engage. Hmm, let's do the ol' "read the instructions" thing.

New spacer is narrower -OK, I'll replace the spacer. Now I'm wondering about the seal, so I guess I'll replace it, too.

Crap! Just read the li'l note that says to replace something called the quad seal, but it ain't included in the kit. That means work is done until the next trip to Longview and the nearest HD shop.

Makes me wonder why HD would put together a kit and go to the trouble of requiring a little seal, and not include it. Corporate minds, I reckon. Mebbe they figger I'll drop a hunnert bucks when I show up to buy that seal. Hah! If I could afford a hunnert bucks every time I darkened the door I'd be a foo-foo Twinkie rider!

Well, guess what I found buried in the peanuts? A quad seal. Pulled the old one out, slid the new one in, replaced the old seal, slid the larger spacer in place, slipped the sprocket on, and then the nut. Then the knee popped big time, the pain hit one of my three working brain cells, and the day is done!

Darn, it's off to crank up the hot tub for a little R&R.

make sure you look at the splines on the 5th gear real close. if they are worn at all i would replace that too. if you don't replace it and it's worn your gonna do the same fix again next year. been there done that.

Yeah, I hear you there. As soon as I saw the worn splines on the old sprocket I checked the splines on the gear. Luckily, they are in good shape.
