No need for a crank sensor with a carburetor, but the ignition trigger is inside the nosecone, and can fail from heat, although it's not real common. That's the first thing I'd check though, given your symptoms.
Your symtoms dont indicate a bad battery , load test or cell test the battery before you trash it as you will probably find , its good to go.
Look for a problem in the coils or fuel system first.
Also check for the dreaded internally broken wires at the pivot point of the front end.

Well actually a crank positioning sensor is a ignition trigger. Both on carb and fi.
So it a cam positioning sensor both are called a CPS.
The ignition trigger on the EVO might not be called a CPS but it is the same thing, it is just not a separate part like the twin cam.
