American Iron reviewed the newest Crane, the HI-4N in September 2012. Not only is it a module design for the nosecone (back in the hot spot again) but the article is more of an install guide. When I went back to reread the article I realized they didn't talk about any performance outcome of the install. It mentioned the writer would use it for a while and comment later.
So, use your best judgement, there a few choices, etc., etc.
Like Tom I have had no problems with the crane. Years ago there were higher failure rates with the nose cone style due to heat but that problem seems to have been solved, if your pipes are very close to the cone this might be a problem but I say use what you have many are using them without problem.
I find it odd as well that your bike is using points, when I look at the parts list (onn Ronnie's HD site) it show's electronic parts for the ignition. If you currently have points you will need additional parts as mentioned, check out Ronnie's you can get a diagram and parts isn't online.
Back then ... way back then ... converting back to points was often done to return to basic ignition. Cost is a whole lot less than replacing the module and some still feel points are so basic to understand and reliable why use anything else.
No rev limiter with just points, the factory module is limited to about 5,200 but I was having cutting out (limiting) at around 4,700 right in the middle of the fast acceleration RPM range.
Somebody forgot to tell Harley because they put points in my 85 EVO. Both the service manual and the parts catalog show points.
my 85 has electronic ign. my official harley parts manual part#99438-86b page 24-25 shows the ignition. no points are pictured. have you actually looked inside the nose cone? if there's points in there, someone changed it to points.

Isn't it commonly thought that the Moco mixed and matched parts in the bastard years when they transitioned to belts and evo motors? Maybe they dumped the last bunch of points into the bikes during those years also.
