I hadn't put 2&2 together. Guess I'll be getting some of those NGK Iridium plug sooner than I thought, like tomorrow.

That is why I have learned to look there first.

Changing plugs doesn't register as "worked on it", I just do it because it's been a while. I've always used Champion without an issue, but they didn't have any so I got the Autolite equivalent. Guess I won't do that again.

I picked up a couple NGK today. They didn't have iridiums on hand, so I got the nickle. But they are so much better quality than the Autolite, even the Champion I've been using. Haven't put them in yet, I will before I take it out again.

Something that old could be the wires. Pick a totally dark night. Get yourself a plant mister filled with water. Fire the old girl up and spray around spark plug wires. If you see light, that is your problem. I worked on one a while back that had a miss and I was doing that. Could see a lot of fire around boot. Pulled out the stethoscope and could here the strangest frying sound around the wires near the plugs also. The owner told me he had just put plugs in it about 500 miles back, so I had not pulled them. After checking a few other things, I pulled the wires. He had a set of fancy chrome plated Denso plugs with screw off caps. He did not tighten the little screw off cap, and in the 500 miles the spark had almost eaten the male threads away, and the aluminum cap came off with the wire. Plain old NGK is what I use. In the Softail line plug, they look just like a Harley plug.

I've experienced that with the caps myself. I don't know if these NGK are designed like that, guess I'll find out tomorrow. I have ordered new plug wires (these I have now I put together a couple years ago) and a new coil. This thing has run great for years, and now it's running like ****, and it seems to coincide with those Autolite plugs. We'll see.

Funny thing, I just changed those Autolites out with the NGK. The Autolite have those screw on caps, and both were loose and loading up with carbon already with about 100 miles on them, but I'm sure they would have been fine if I had tightened those caps. I'm sure that was the problem, I'll get out later today, thanks!
