I just bought a '96 Ultra Classic, and it has the click problem on occasion when I hit the starter button. The guy I bought it from hadnt owned it long and said that he never had that problem but the previous owner had installed a chrome button on the back side of the starter. No problems when I do use that button, but I am curious about it as I hadnt seen anything about it here on HDF. Anyone have any information on it, such as who makes it?
That button is a patch repair, an admission of defeat. When you've corrected the starting problem you'll be able to chuck it in the bin, where it belongs! The dreaded click is a common subject, but the sticky texas referred to is well worth reading - at present it is the thread directly above yours!
It read the sticky, actually before I bought the bike, since there was no mention of this fix in there that I hadf seen was part of why I had asked. Using the chrome button is a bit of a bother, so I was considering doing the relay thing. It does the trick atm but I may fix it the other way soon seeing as how I'm laid up with a broken leg! Thanks for the info!
That button has gotten me home more than once until I got a charging system lined out on my FXR that wasn't providing enough to keep the battery fully charged. It bypasses a bunch of things and you get whatever is in the battery directly to the starter. I still use it on both bikes for cold starts. I put it on the Ultra just for insurance, plus compression checks without turning on the ignition so no need to take out the EFI relay.

As Graham said the button is a Band-Aid, the relay is the fix.

Well you can still crawl around, and that button will be at eye level, so easy to work on! Jus' sayin'.......
It's all good lol I do plan to get out to the garage and tinker with it a bit anyway. Need to repaint the inner fairing and I wanna take the tour pack and the fugly hitch off. Get her all clean and polished for when I'm healed so she's ready to ride!
