Oil light came on and I swung into auto store checked the oil, missing lots. Bought two quarts and was above add line.
This week I checked oil and it was at the add line so I did about a whole quart.
so the last 200+ miles neutral has been a complete bitch to find.
checked oil today and it was less than 'full cold' shall we say and then I lessened the top 2 primary inspection screws then the two bottoms and out came the deluge.
Lots of theories will be espoused for the fewer possibilities that may in fact exist, please help but restraint as always will be appreciated. Yeah, I'm a douche!
Seriously, some of you wrenches are f*cking brilliant, you all know who you are.

Compression is about 160 and is equal in both cylinders.
Changed all three holes 2 months ago and all 'appeared' to be normal so this is a rather new development in my best opinion.

Either the seal behind the compensator sprocket is shot or the case is cracked around that area.

Could be Jasper's fault. I was chasing him and brought the road sofa to about 6600 rpm. I had earplugs and the radio on. And I felt a small amount of foreign vibes under the saddle.
If the seal is shot does the inner have to come off?

 

The good Doctor is more than likely correct. Cracked cases on the '98's are almost unheard of, so that's a good thing. You might want to check your vents and do a leak down onit while it's warm.

Most likely the crank seal behind the rotor. Not that bad of a job, I had to do it recently for the same symtom you are experiencing.

 

heh, he's just trying to beat me at something! (in this case breaking his bagger)

unfortunately, I beat him again tonight, and ripped apart the FRONT cylinder head gasket...except this time the base gasket went with it and started PUMPING oil out the side of the bike. luckily this time around we were 1/2mile from our local indy, and i managed to get her there and borrow his trailer. probably pulled the rocker-side studs on this side too

 

when I bought my bike the primary was WAY over full of oil. and the engine was low. adjusted oil levels and rode it 500 miles and found the same thing. and the next week my starter jackshaft went out. so while having it tore down I replaced the compensator shaft seal and now my oil levels stay where they should be.
