Just picked it up along with a new primary gasket. If this is gonna cost me less than $50 it will be a gigantic relief. Will drain tonight and wrench on the 4th as America's birthday will be a day off for me as well. It is planned that way anyhow.

Clean the area around the seal really well with brake cleaner. Check it really really close for a crack. If you don't see any, put it back together and you'll most likely be good.

One other simple thing that happened to mine a few years back. The clamp for the stator wiring came loose and the oil poured out there. (But not very quickly)

I think I may have gotten the seal good to go this time. I did the repair a week ago but it still was leaking oil into the primary but I was not too alarmed at all as I was sure the seal wasn't properly made. I rushed through it. So this time I did it 10x faster and am rather hopeful however. I researched youtube and forum and came across what I thought was good advice. Put the seal in backwards thanks to our own Dan89flstc.

Special tools were a pvc 1-1/2 coupling and a pvc 2" pipe. the pipe was better as it made better contact with the whole of the seal. The seal was $3. The atf was $10 and then 3 quarts of your favorite oil. A ratchet strap on the rear brake pedal is a good idea too or you'll be chaing your sled all over the garage. I also gotta thank Jasper for loan of a 1/2" torque wrench that could make 175#. The stator nut is 1-1/2" 6 point as well that gets cranked down. The clutch hub does not have to come off. Yup!

This is Dan's idea as I think it makes more sense. If this leaks again, tomorrow or this week then I will redo it like this. I did not have the courage to leave it but I will. next time. What next time!?!?!?

This is how I found the seal. I bet I could have reused it but I decided to go new fro $3. I have seen them chewed up before too... not this one. Maybe I could double up and one closest to engine put it in backwards then the other would be a la FSM.

Speaking of which the this is in the engine section of the 1998 flt FSM and not the primary chaincase portion.

Hmmmm, I wouldn't go putting seals in backwards, they are there to do a specific job...
