Hey! New to the forum here. I have a 1997 HD FLHTC EFI (M&M EFI) that I'm looking to do some upgrades to this winter. I bought the bike on eBay from a shop that rebuilt the engine after the oil pump took a dive for the previous owner. The engine is pretty stock except a 0.005" overbore and pretty much everything new from the connecting rods to the valve springs (new about 7500 miles ago). I have Screamin' Eagle slip-ons on the stock headpipes with no baffles and power cones at the head ends. The bike still has the stock air cleaner. I find that if I'm around 2000 RPM, I absolutely have to downshift to give it any throttle or it will lug down. I don't want a land speed record- I just want a little wider power band and some more low end usable torque
Does anyone have any suggestions as far as air cleaners (Big Sucker or the like)? Also, what has anyone used as far as piggy-back fuel management with good success? I'm looking at possibly installing an Andrews EV27 cam. Do you have a different recommendations on a cam?
To calrify, at 2000 RPM, I can easily maintain speed or gently accelerate, but if I need to pull out and pass someone or pull a big hill, I have to downshift.
I would probably have the revs a little higher than that before really throttling it anyway, but putting some baffles back in the pipes would help a lot.
I can pull out with 2k on the tach on my S&S 107 and overtake, but you may have to change down, depending on the circumstances! However, you can improve things with a change of cam, as HarDlife suggests. I used an EV27 in an earlier life, but if doing it again would probably go with an EV13.
HarDlife, thanks for the info. When I bought the bike, it had the stock mufflers on it with the baffles removed and I scored a set of barely used SE slip-ons through a bartering arrangement. I put them on and ran it with the baffles in it at first. I hated the way it sounded (too quiet) and it actually ran really bad, like it was choking out and starving for air. I did some experimenting and started by removing the packing around the baffles to no avail. I then cut out the little diverter, essentially making it a small straight pipe (the inner diameter of the baffle) again, to no avail. I then cut the end cap off the baffle and reinstalled that and it improved quite a bit, but still wasn't where it was before. Once I took the end cap out and ran them open, it really woke up and was back to where it was before all that. I did install the power cones in the pipes to maintain at least some back-pressure and I noticed a slight improvement in the low end torque. I'll check in to the EV-13 and EV-23.
spanky02- I should know you. What do you ride? That will clue me in... haha! I'll check out that Woods cam too.
