Default Recommendations Please

Hey all...just picked up a 99 softail and am looking at putting on a stage one intake and a better exhaust. I am interested in hearing some recommedations on what to use to boost a bit of power and get a deep throaty sound of the Evo. Right now she has stock intake and stock exhaust...sounds a bit whimpy and really wanting to change such. Budget is essential of course.

Thanks for all your help!

For the intake you could drill some holes in your stock backplate, or get an SE backplate. Use a K&N type hi flow filter. Tweak your idle mixture setting, shim your stock needle or get sporty/NOKK/CVP needle, and change your slow jet to a 45.
For exhaust, some good slip-ons (SE, V&H, cycleshack) will wake up the sound and help performance a little.

SE air cleaner, if you want to retain a 'stock' appearance. S&S if ya like the teardrop. Ness big sucker if ya like having oil on your right leg.

Thunderheader.

New ignition, cam of your choice, get the carb dyno tuned.

You'll have a great running bike.

Depending on how "budget essential" things are, there are a few things you can do.

With the exhaust, on the very inexpensive side, you could drill out the baffles in your stock pipe and install a set of thunder torque inserts.... CLICKY HERE. Or you could get a nice set of slip ons.

With the Air cleaner, you can check out the options that we offer. If you look at the bottom of Air Cleaner we have, you can see some Dyno sheets. Here is a picture of what one customer did with our black sano air cleaner...

The stock air filter is actually an airbox and behind the chrome cover is a large black plastic moulding, which is what HarDlife is suggesting you drill. If you take off the chrome cover you will see at least one baffle, which you can easily remove to improve breathing and add a little induction noise. Costs nothing!

If you do use a drill on it, do so outside the filter element, otherwise it becomes redundant! The simplest bolt-on solution is an SE kit, which uses your current chrome cover and includes a simple backplate to replace the plastic moulding, plus a new filter element.

Default SE slip-on's

Mann's HD in Edinberg, IN has a set of slash cut SE slip-on's that will fit the stock set-up. I got a set on my 99' Heritage. They sounds good to me YMMV.

The SE slip-on's for the 99' Softail are getting a bit hard to find.

Here is a link to a article I found some time ago, very well written and easy to understand and there are some examples of builds at the end
http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/HP2.html
http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/ is also a good one and there as well you will find various "stage" builds. These will give you some templates for matching pipes and AC's as well as carb and an idea as to the expected gains.
Cheers

On the high-end, RB Racing makes some nice two-into-one pipes. Their web site is an interesting read in any case. http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/index.htm

Disclaimer: I have no personal experience with their pipes, I am hoping you or someone else will buy a pair and tell me if they are worth it.

Hackd has the ticket.........

Nothing sounds like a Thunderheader AND it makes horses.
