Default Stinking Badges

I thought each year model had a different tank badge. I have a 97 Ultra and I am always mistaking other Bikes as being the same year by looking at the tanks only to find out its a twin cam 2002 I can see no diff in the tank design. Any reason why?

Some of the tank stickers used on Evo's were based on tank badges from the past.

Back in the 70s the tank badges changed every year, for a while, but I haven't noticed that for Evos and onwards, except for specials and commemoratives.
