I have gotten very lax on cleaning my bike. I wipe down a little with spray cleaner every other month or so, but it never really gets a thorough cleaning. Maintenance is always done on schedule.
I give them a good cleaning at oil change time, every 3K miles.
Hot water, soap, an assortment of soft brushes for the tight spots, then good old paste wax and the wax is key. Many of these spray on cleaners or finish protectants might help in the short term but they tend to leave an oily residue that actually attract dust and they don't last long. If you clean often then that's ok and probably speeds things up. I use plain old simonize on the tins and the chrome, I can blow the dust off with a compressor or a good ride, bugs come off with no effort and no swirls...
I keep it in my bag with a micro fiber cloth........
