'96 EFI and PClll - anybody ever try it?
was just wondering if anybody has ever tried it. I realize that Dynojet says only '97-'98 and to do that on my RK I would have to change the ECM to those years but is it physically impossible to connect to the'96? The PC lll just piggy backs on the ECM. I'm sure there are no maps for this setup either but the PC lll is adjustable. What is the differance in a '96 ECM verses '97-'98 with stock setup loaded on both. I see there are used '97 ECM's for sale but you don't know whats on them until after you buy it - then you have to take it and get it red and possibly reflashed. I have gone beyond the limitations of the DFO that I had been using and need to go to the next level without spending alot.
thanks

I do know the pins that connects the ECM to the harness are not in the same location on the 96 as it is on the 98 model as I switched one out for the other on a 96 E Glide. Try to find some on ebay under "engine wiring" and look at the pins on the ECM connector.
Guy with the 98 was going to carb and the guy with the 96 was having EFI issues. We converted the 98 to carb and them swapped out the wiring harness on the 96 with the 98 harness.
Swapped the manifold also as he was running the red topped injectors on the 98. The 96 runs well and it was about 2 yrs or so ago by now.

I don't believe any after market tuner will work with the MMI, however both S&S and H-D sell a replacement module which is tunable. The S&S one is sold as a VFI Module kit. I don't know how it compares in cost with a PC3, but also look up the HD one, which I understand is the same as the S&S and may be cheaper. That way you have a single module, not a piggy-back.

1340 EVO

SUPERTRAP MUFFLERS / BREATHER
1996 BIKE WITH 97-98 ECM
I called DynoJet, and the guy I spoke with said that the PC III would work with some 96s and some it wouldn't, and they recommended the 97-98 ECM
Mine works good.

well the VFI module is $620. About the same as a used '97 ECM and a PClll and possible reflash. Their web site says very little about what it can do. Also not sure if it's as popular with tuners as the PClll is. I didn't get to far trying to find info on H-D replacement module. May someone has a part #.
Dynojet said there PC lll would work on some '96's. interesting! I wonder which models?

97-98 used ECM's can be purchased cheap and almost giving them away after chit canning the M&M, can also get a PC3 cheap used. The original question on the 96 ECM compatability, I don't know but the connector has to be the same because the 97-98 will hook into the same 96 wire harness.
I ran a PC3 for several years, went to a carb, sold the PC3 for $75 and still have the 97 ECM, can't see dumping $600 into the M&M system for new stuff. If you check out the maps on Dynojet, the Evo canned map section is weak and not much to work with.
