I'm planning to do a stage 1 to my RK. I just got a 97 ecm on ebay, what should I expect to have to do when I install the ecm? I have a Revtech DFO coming (clearance priced at J&P). Is there any more to the upgrade than just swapping out the ecms? If I were just to swap them before the air/exhaust changes would it run without any other changes. I'm new to EFI, have read a bunch of previous posts but didn't run across the answers to my specific questions.
The 97 ecm will work without any changes, unless you did a cam change or internal mods. Your DFO will also work on your 96 ecm also, it takes sensor referances and changes the injector pulse width to add fuel by the settings you choose.
The 97 ecm upgrade will accept a SE Race Tuner and a PC3 to have more control of tuning and the 96 ecm is limited to what you purchased
Several people on here run the DFO so they might chime in to give you some help on the DFO settings.
I may just use the DFO with the 96 ECM to start and hold the 97 ECM in reserve in case I need it in the future. With 5900 miles on the bike, I expect to have it for a while. Thanks for your feedback.
5900 miles sounds sweet, you will have it for a while. Keep that 97 ecm for when you get the performance bug and upgrade to a PC3, either way sounds like you have a plan.
96 if your upgrades are going to be minimal, then the DFO should be fine, you can tune it your self by following the directions or call them and they will give you basic a setting for your set up. Save the other ECM for when you want more horsepower, great for meraging on the hiway or passing slower traffic.
If you don't mind what did you pay on ebay for the 97 ECM? been looking myself?
150 shipped, I don't know if thats good or bad but Surdykes and Chicago HD had them as discontinued, made me nervous. used but tested, well rated seller.

Got the 97 ECM and The Ness Big Sucker today. The DFO a couple of days ago. So this just may happen over the weekend if I don't drink too much tequila tonight. Gotta go to the Donny Smith show on Sunday, it's the only good sized custom show of the year around here. The 97 ECM does not look like a straight bolt on but if and when I need it, I'll figure out a way.
