Also, the fuel lines may need to be replaced. The stuff they sell us today will destroy fuel lines from that era. The little bits of rubber wind up in your carb jets.

On my wife's bike the left tank cap has left handed threads, and the right is of course right handed.

Is it different on this bike?

Fuel left side first then top off right side.

I can tell that the fuel lines have been recently replaced, but there's no way to tell if anything else has been replaced without draining the gas and taking it all apart. There was a run of petcocks that were recalled, but I don't know if this is one, or if it was ever replaced. If there is any debris in the tank collecting at the screen, it would run crappy all the time...not just when the fuel level is low. Same goes for the petcock. After I filled up, she ran like a champ.

Left side first seems to be the tip I was looking for! Thanks fellas!

The petcock screen sticks up a couple of inches.. If the lower portion is clogged, it will run fine while full.. Had mine do that when we first started with the ethanol garbage, cleaned the hell out of my tank.. Also, have you tried loosening the cap when its starving?? If its a cap, this would let it breath.. Of course, be careful as it will also leak..

With the fuel having got low, I would also drain the carb. That condensation you mentioned may have got into the float chamber. I've also owned pushrod BMW twins and it was an item on my personal list of routine maintenance.
