Hopefully someone much more experienced than I can help me out here with the problem I am having with my bike. I have a 1989 Electra Glide Ultra Classic (with the Evo 2 motor) I purchased the bike and recently rebuilt her from the ground up. I have a strange problem that really has me stumped. Sometimes the bike will start, and other times it won't. By start, I mean that the starter will engage; other times the relay clicks (the relay on the right side under the cover.) Trying to troubleshoot my issue, I had the starter sent out to a local shop that specializes in rebuilding starters, and had the entire unit cleaned and had new guts put in. Same issue still happens... I found that when the starter will not engage, I can pul off the magneto connecter (just under the positive terminal connected to the starter housing) and it will crank over every time. Am I correct in thinking that my issue lies somewhere on the handlebar controls for the START/STOP switch or the starter switch?
Try looking at the switches on the bars to start might be grounding out. Or maybe wire on starter loose or cracked. Do you have a fresh battery full charge. These are some idea someone else should chime in
By the switches on my sporty the wire started to come out from the button so it would ground out.
Thank you all so much. I checked out the sticky that was posted (which I didn't see before) and it described my problem perfectly. Thanks again! This forum never fails to help...
