Cool 85 Electra Glide Problem

85 Electra Glide with S&S Super E Shorty carb. I know she will puke oil out of ventcase hose which leads to bottom of frame, due to the S&S carb not having a hook up for vent hose, like stock carb did. She pukes after sitting all winter for awhile then quits after a few short rides. Always has. Then no problem. Rode her on a forty mile trip, no short rides upon starting her up for the first time this spring. On way home she acted like lifters were floating and 70 top speed. Parked at home and she puked half a quart out. Now can't even get close to redline on rpm's. When shutting off can hear oil gurgiling draing from topend. New plugs, new oil change and still the same. Starts great idles great. Some one told me, may have a oil line clogged. Someone else said ball in oil pump that lets oil drain back may be stuck. Anyone have this problem before? Going to take breather off and hand choke her while running to clear carb. I have a broke choke lever on carb, to see if maybe it is in the carb. Any replies appreciated.

The ball valve does not let oil drain back. It stops oil from draining into your motor (drain forward.) Stopped up oil return line or oil filter or cooler if you have one, maybe. Bad oil pump scavenger side, maybe.

Thx Dr.Hess
Haven't rode it more than 200 miles last year and done fine. Oil pump is original. Probably what it is. Can't really see oil lines doing that but again they are original. 75,000 on them. 10,000 on new topend. Always holds good oil pressure. Outside guage on it. Know that has nothing to do with the scravenger part of pump though. New oil and Filter. The gurgling when shut off (oil gurgling down, it sounds like} makes me think oil pump problem. Guess I will check the hoses and go from there. Or ride it more and see if it comes ot of it. Short rides.

Thx

i had a breather gear break on my 85 when it was a couple of years old. a valve spring broke and it fell down an oil return hole breaking the breather. researching this i found that 85's were notorious for breaking valve springs. when the breather is broke oil will blow out of the breather hose.

It is possible for a piece of trash to break off something or otherwise wind up in the case, then get sucked up into the scavenger side and shear the key or gouge up the pump so it doesn't pump properly. I would cut the oil filter apart and see if anything funny is in there, inspect the lines (take off at the pump and blow through them), and then pull the oil pump off and take a look inside it. Just throwing out my amateur ideas. One of the professionals will chime in shortly, I'm sure.

Be a while till I get time to check her out. Have my 03 Heritage, so I can ride. Going Back to work, for awhile. Will keep checking on here for advice's. I'm thinking ball not seatting in oil pump though. Keyway not sheared or no oil pressure would be there.

Thx

You have 2 oil pumps. The scavenger pump is acting up per your description. The ball is not in the scavenger pump circuit.

Would that hold back RPM's?
