Starter or button?
Ever great now and then I hit the start button and nothing.. Then hit it again and it starts easy like new. Never been hard to start, actually jumps to life soon as the starter spins. So seems to me it's either a dead spot in the starter or maybe in the start button.? Maybe start button collected oil and dirt. 30k miles on it.
Yes....go ahead and get the manual start button that replaces the solenoid cover. It will cut your diagnostics in half. If it won't crank with the switch, but will with the push-button....you have a relay, wiring or switch problem. If it won't crank with the manual push-button....problem is in the starter direction.
You may also have some pitted or corroded contacts in your solenoid. You can check all that out when you install your manual push-button.

Even so, if you can reach the solenoid end cap with your finger, install the push button end cap.
The mechanical push button will give you a bit more peace of mind (and just might get you home when you push the starter button and get just the "click").
