It's taken THIS long
It's a 1992/1993 Tour Glide Ultra.
Engine was purring before storage in a barn, off the floor, covered, on a stand for 6 years. The Fuel tank, def'n needs a professional cleanout and inner coating. Of course, 3 point fluids and a spark plug check, new fuel filter, etc are on my to do list. The carb... I'll rebuild it if'n I have to. it is not clean, but actuating it gives me confidence it may not be terribly out of shape. Please correct me if I'm wrongly confident.
I'm also rebuilding the front brake calipers and it's enjoyable to finally have hands on my own scooter (and have a reliable 'main' bike).
Here's what is on my mind:
1: Gonna keep the whitewalls. Front Suspension is gonna blow it's air seals soon, I wager. I need some really good suspension options for the forks. No lowering desired, but gotta be beefier than this air ride stuff, my '22 RK is spoiling me rotten.
2: Is there such a thing as a 'swaybar' upgrade for this frame? Something to increase its stiffness? Like a fork brace, for frames?
3: Rhino Bedliner for Paint. Change My Mind.
4: Any legit way to re-black the engine case in-situ?
5: If I can get away with it (air ride delete?), some higher reach handlebars.
6: PLEASE: if you have any sources for examples of folks that have 'finally done something' with their beloved old bike, please share!
6 years, I don't have experience with Harley carbs, but on my Japanese bikes with 4 carbs (hence very tiny jets) you wouldn't get away without disassemby. Of course you'll flush fresh gas through, probably with some Seafoam or other carb cleaner?
Good luck. I'm looking forward to reading about your progress.
As for the bed liner, I am in agreement with Harv HD.
Go through the complete fuel system from the tank to the intake seals.
Clean and take care of the tank, whatever it may need.
Pull the petcock and clean or replace the screen (this is the fuel filter) or replace the the whole petcock if it's original.
New fuel hose, including cross over hose at front bottom of the tank.
New vacuum hose on the VOES.
Disassemble and clean carb.
Replace intake manifold seals.
Harley Texture black is a match for the engine and holds up well,
Texture Black, not wrinkle black.
No need for primer, just sand a little, clean and dry, mask and spray.
You can spray the cylinders, then scrape or sand the paint from the edges of the fins after it dries.
You mean paint the whole bike with that? No, you'll ruin the character of the old bike. Unless your wanting a rat bike. Your bike, your vision.
You can keep the air adjustment and still delete the anti-dive solenoid and air reservoir in the bars, air lines and fittings from early '00's will work there, I did that on my '90, 10oz of oil and 14lbs of air rides good.
