Excessive Backfire
I've got an '01 FLHRI that backfires every time I back of the throttle. I've had it to the dealer several times, they've gone through the intake looking for leaks, resealing it, etc. and it still backfires excessively.
I'm thinking about an aftermarket performance module and remapping. Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it? Thanks.

Is it carb'd or fuel injected? 01 came with carb but had a fuel injection option also.
Carb'd - rejet it
EFI - add a PCIII and add fuel to the 0 throttle position.
or put the stock air cleaner back on it.
This is assuming the plugs and timing are OK and there are no intake leaks.
Bike is running lean. This is keeping it simple. I am sure you will get more indept answers. Or you could take it to a certified dynotuner and have them sort it out. This would be the best option but cost the most. Good luck.

Please give us your definition of "Backfiring".... and where is the sound coming from???
Reason I ask is you might be confusing Backfiring with Decel Pop...
Backfiring is through the Intake tract, where the combustion is escaping through the intake manifold, and exiting through the induction module...
Decel pop is through the exhaust, and occurs at the moment that the throttle is rolled back to it's 0% position....
