Just read your post. Backfire is always a problem. But how much a problem is a matter of what is causing it to backfire. I'd take the bike, if you haven't already, to a competent mech.
Usually the back fire on the HD due to the air/fuel mixture at 0 throttle needing to be adjusted. On bikes with EFI and running a PC III adding fuel at the 0 throttle positions has got rid of backfire in the decell zero throttle position.
