Default Carb/Fuel issues

New member here first post. Hello everyone i recently bought my first Harley! 1999 Dyna FXDX Super Glide Sport. Yeah buddy! I have always owned and have been a rider since i was 15. Currently own 3. The guy i bought my Harley from informed me to make sure and turn petcock off after engine is shut down. Due to gravity fed. Makes sense. I got the bike home (on a trailer) and turned petcock on and it fired right up. Shut it down after a quick ride and didn't turn off petcock. 10 minutes later i tried to start it and it would barely turn over. So i pulled plug and it spun free spitting gas out of the cylinder. Cleaned plug installed it and fired right up. Question is do i have a stuck float or is this normal? I have never had to do this with any bikes i own. After reading up on this i will be turning off all from now on. But i want to make sure i don't have a problem with my carb. Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a stuck float.

There could be an issue with the needle and seat and or the float adjustment.

Best to correct the problem to avoid washing the cylinder's.

Also I think the fuel could leak into the crankcase.

If it is a stuck float when the engine not running and the petcock on there should be fuel coming out the over flow tube on the carb. Is it stock or after market carb? When starting only leave the chock as short of a time as possible. Good thing to do on carb HD is to run it a short time with the petcock off like a block before your house.

Turn your petcock off, pull the bowl off the carb, and insure that the sides of the needle are not buggered from the effects of ethanol fuel corrosion, and also insure that there in not debris between the viton tip of the needle, and the seat.
That should get you rolling.

Thanks for the help guys. I was wondering why fuel wasn't leaking from carb to. Not sure if it is aftermarket or not . I will be going over it this weekend. Will post findings.

Does it have a CV carb? If it does it will have either a big black cap on top or custom chrome one. I have cleared dirt out of them before but running them out of gas then turn the gas on and most times if you have trash on the needle or seat is will flush it out into the bowel. But it will be best to take it apart and check it out. Did the bike sit for a long time?
Good luck hope all works out fine.
