These threads are like politics and religion. Everyone has an opinion and no ones going to change theirs.

I think/believe that folks should have a choice. Me, I made my choice a long time ago. I wear a helmet and for me the "law" is immaterial.

I believe the rider should have their own choice. Just as I believe that we shouldn't be mandated to wear seat belts. Just my opinion.

Here's how I see it. You don't tell me how to live my life and I won't tell you how to live yours.

I don't want my government telling me how to live my life. If you want your government telling you how to live yours, good for you.

The above is for whomever it applies to.

I am so far in the libertarian camp on these things. It is not the governments damned business what I do as long as I am not hurting someone else.

That being said, it is also not the governments job to pay for my medical bills when I have a wreck. It don't matter if I am in shorts and flip flops bare chested, or in full leathers...

I think that is mostly true, and I completely agree...However, the harsh reality is if someone chooses not to wear a helmet, and wrecks and injures themselves because of that, the government (or actually the hospital) will indeed spend all the hundreds of thousands of dollars saving their life. They are obligated to. They will of course try to collect the monies from the patient, but likely they will loose. And the guy who says it is my life and my choice not to wear a helmet, now gets free medical care for his injury.

Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with the choice of wearing a helmet or not. But for those who don't - I hope you have enough medical insurance to cover your injuries.

I agree with the above post, but would add this. The expenses might not stop with "saving their life". Sometimes the expenses also include being retrained, or educated, in some other manner needed to support a rider, and possibly family. So I would add that in addition to enough medical insurance people should have a 'plan B' to support themselves/their family in the event of something bad happening.
